Trademark Registration and Prosecution in Russia

We help foreign counsel and brand owners search, file and prosecute national Russian trademark applications, then keep owner name and address details current and registrations renewed.

What we handle

Our work covers the national Russian route from clearance and specification drafting through examination, registration and routine portfolio maintenance.

Search
S

Preliminary clearance searches

Identical and similarity searches covering Russian national rights, Madrid designations and relevant Cyrillic, Latin and conceptual variants.

Strategy
ST

Filing strategy and specification

Applicant, mark version, priority, Nice classes and goods/services wording aligned with the planned Russian business.

Filing
F

National application filing

Russian-language application, mark description, translation and transliteration details, priority documents, power of attorney and fee payment.

Prosecution
P

Examination and office actions

Formal and substantive prosecution, examiner requests, notifications, specification amendments, evidence and legal submissions.

Changes
CH

Name, address and correspondence changes, technical corrections, specification limitations and permitted changes to mark elements.

Renewal
R

Renewal and fee planning

Ten-year renewals, grace-period filings, register checks and official-fee calculations by classes and specification length.

Plan the application before filing

The strongest filing is usually the one whose mark, owner data and specification were tested before the priority date was fixed.

Clearance in the Russian marketWe search earlier national marks and Madrid designations, including transliterations, translations, look-alike signs and related commercial identifiers.
Mark version and applicantWord, figurative and combined marks can produce different protection. The applicant should be the intended long-term owner.
Goods and services wordingThe Russian specification defines the scope of protection, affects examination and should reflect the applicant's real or planned business.
Simple power of attorneyFiling through our firm requires a power of attorney in simple written form. Notarization, apostille and legalization are not required.
Priority planningA Paris Convention priority claim normally requires filing in Russia within six months from the first application and timely supporting documents.
Specification cost controlLong lists can increase both filing and renewal costs. We remove duplication and unnecessary terms while preserving commercially useful coverage.

Standard or accelerated examination

Both routes apply the same registrability rules. The choice is mainly about timing, budget and how quickly the client needs an examination result.

Standard procedure
STD

Regular Rospatent examination

In Rospatent's 2025 Annual Report, the average service time on the state digital platform was 157 working days, approximately 7-8 months. Office actions, amendments and fee payment can affect timing.

Accelerated procedure
FAST

Paid FIPS search and fast-track request

A search across all 45 Nice classes is normally completed within 10 working days. Its results support a request for accelerated examination, with first examination correspondence generally targeted within two months.

Fee estimates and certificates

Before filing, we set out attorney fees and expected official fees separately and flag the variables that may change the total.

A clear estimate before filing

Our proposal covers attorney services and expected official fees for filing, examination and registration, with the assumptions stated.

Classes and list length matter

Official fees depend on the number of Nice classes. An additional official fee applies to each goods/services item over 10 in one class at application examination and again at renewal.

Electronic certificate by default

Rospatent issues the trademark certificate electronically. It can be forwarded immediately and avoids international courier costs.

Paper certificate remains available

A paper certificate may still be requested separately and is subject to an additional official fee.

Process for foreign counsel

We provide a clear filing plan, predictable documents and concise reporting that can be forwarded to the client.

01

First review

We review the mark, applicant details, goods and services, and any priority claim.

02

Proposal and recommendations

We provide our fee proposal covering services and official fees, together with comments and filing recommendations.

03

Search, prepare and file

If instructed, we conduct a full clearance search and report. We then finalize and file the Russian application.

04

Prosecute

We report requests and notifications, recommend options and file responses on time.

05

Certificate and renewal diary

We arrange grant fees, verify the register entry, send the e-certificate and docket the renewal deadline.

Keep the registration accurate and usable

Grant is not the end of the file. Owner data, the protected list, evidence of use and renewal timing should remain under active review.

Changes in the registerUnder Civil Code Article 1232(1), registered information should reflect reality. We record changes to the owner's name, address and correspondence details, as well as permitted limitations and corrections.
Three-year use requirementA registration can become vulnerable if the mark is not genuinely used in Russia for a continuous three-year period. Owners should preserve dated evidence for the goods and services actually covered.
Renewal and grace periodProtection lasts 10 years from filing and can be renewed indefinitely. Renewal is filed in the final year; a further six-month period may be requested after expiry, subject to additional fees.
